The Klink family and our passion for smooth-haired miniature dachshunds

The Klink Family

We are the Klink family, Bert and Herma, and for many years now we have been the proud owners of a pack of smooth-haired miniature dachshunds. In 1986, our first dachshund came into our lives. It was a female named Puppie, who was given up by her owners due to a divorce.

Our home: aan den Voorhoeve

This was the second time in her young life. Although she wasn't a smooth-haired dachshund, a look in her eyes made us melt and she had already found her way into our hearts. We enjoyed her company for sixteen years, until we sadly had to let her go.

Once a dachshund, always a dachshund

As is often said, "once a dachshund, always a dachshund" certainly applies to us. No, we would wait a bit before getting another dachshund and give the loss of Puppie a place, but blood is thicker than water and our second dachshund Chester was acquired. We simply couldn't miss out on those cheerful, mischievous and intelligent dachshund antics.

What a clown he was, and within a short time he had wrapped our family around his little brown paws. As the name suggests, a true cheerful one, and just like all our dachshunds, a huge fan of sitting on laps. We call it being "teckeld," but this is unconditional love. The next dachshund became our girl Ashley.

Over the years, we also acquired a West Highland White Terrier. His name was Napoleon and he behaved the same way. A wonderful little guy, but boy was he tough. Napoleon reached the respectable age of 14.

The Beginning of Our Breeding

Often we were asked if a litter of our dachshunds could be born. At some point, we felt so connected to dachshunds and had such a strong need to breed a litter with strong, healthy and lively dachshunds that our first litter was born with Ashley. The puppies were sold very quickly, except for one, Noa, who stayed happily with us.

My husband's work brought changes again. As a career officer, he was transferred to Denmark and the whole 'bunch' naturally went along. What space we had there, and our pack enjoyed nature to the fullest.

Ashley with her wheelchair

Ashley's Story

During one of our vacations, the most terrible thing happened. While our dogs were staying at a boarding kennel, Ashley had an accident due to an unknown cause, which damaged her spine and resulted in paralysis of her hind legs.

The vet there advised us to have her put to sleep. This was absolutely unthinkable for us. We would only consider euthanasia if there was pain, and according to the vet, she wasn't in pain.

After an operation and many sleepless nights, we found the website www.hondenrolstoel.nl on the internet. A phone call was all it took. After giving her measurements, the wheelchair was built. Within two weeks, we had it in our home.

Ashley was helped to walk in her wheelchair by her daughter Noa, whom we had kept from the previously mentioned litter. When Ashley got stuck, Noa would grab her by the ear and pull her loose. Our Ashley thus had her own service dog. This extended her life by another six and a half years and only strengthened our love for dachshunds.

Back to the Netherlands

After a few more years in Italy, I (Herma) had a CVA and returning to the Netherlands was essentially the best option for rehabilitation. So everyone moved back. Ashley passed away shortly after at the age of 10, but she had a wonderful life until the end.

You guessed it: another new lady arrived, our Charlotte, and she is now the mother of five wonderful puppies. They are growing like weeds and will be ready to leave the nest at the end of March. We will miss them, but... yes, we're keeping one: Einstein. A half-brother of Einstein has found his way to our son and daughter-in-law and will be named Plato and will move in with Emma, a sweet and friendly red Cocker Spaniel.

NTC Breeder Membership

Meanwhile, with all our experience with dachshunds, we submitted an application to the Nederlandse Teckel Club (NTC) to be recognized as an NTC breeder. We are happy to meet the requirements they set for breeding a healthy, cheerful dachshund. We have already applied these requirements in all our previous litters.

We believe you owe this to the breed, and our experiences with the NTC have been very positive. This application was honored in the meantime!
